The future of fashion is circular
The fashion industry and “fast” fashion especially has an enormous impact on our environment. The current unsustainable economic model of take-make-dispose is resulting in mountains of barely worn garments thrown away. But by redesigning the way it does things, the industry can play a major role in contributing to the EU’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050 as part of the European Green Deal.

This month Horizon magazine explores how a circular economy approach can transform the world of fashion, creating better products and services for customers and contributing to a more inspired and ethical fashion industry.

We speak to innovators creating sustainable materials made from wood and mushroom fibres and even fish skins. We learn how textile waste is reduced to fibres and spun into yarn to make fabric for new clothes, demonstrating a circular approach to garment production.

We explore augmented and virtual reality to discover how smart apps and digital technology are giving the industry a “makeover”. Lastly, we investigate how technology can ensure an ethical and sustainable supply chain that allows fashion to be locally produced using locally sourced materials.
