Under Spain’s EMFAF 2021-2027 Programme, the “Waste collection with the participation of fishermen in the sea and beaches 2024” call has been launched for the Basque Country.

Objectives:

Protect and recover biodiversity and marine ecosystems through the collection of waste or other marine debris at sea by fishermen.

The investments that may be eligible for subsidies will be the following:

  • The collection of lost fishing gear from the sea, especially aimed at combating ghost fishing.
  • The purchase and, where appropriate, the installation on board of equipment for the collection and storage of marine litter.
  • The creation of waste collection systems for the participation of fishermen, including financial incentives.
  • The purchase and, where appropriate, the installation in fishing ports of equipment for the storage and recycling of marine litter.
  • Communication, information and awareness campaigns, to encourage fishermen and other interested parties to participate in projects to collect lost fishing gear.
  • The training of fishermen and port agents.

Eligible applicants:

The EMFAF grants target fishing sector operators, including individuals, fishing associations and enterprises. Refer to the call announcement and Spain’s EMFAF Programme for more details.

Budget:

The maximum co-financing rate from the EMFAF for a specific objective should be 70% of the eligible public expenditure, except for compensation for additional costs in the ultraperipheral regions, in which case it can reach up to 100%.
