Description
The SpongeWorks project will co-create and upscale sponge landscapes by working with natural water retention and sustainable management to enhance soil and water health, as well as climate resilience.
SpongeWorks launched a call for eight Associated Regions to receive up to EUR 100 000 of financial support to develop and implement innovative sponge measures and strategies tailored to their territory.
Objectives:
Regional or local authorities or basin organisations who are interested in implementing or developing strategies and solutions to increase natural water retention measures will receive guidance, financial support and technical assistance from the SpongeWorks consortium.
Eligible actions include evaluation and analysis of existing sponge measures already implemented; implementation of sponge measures such as restoration of rivers, floodplains; development of strategies and financing plans; community building; and engagement and support activities. Associated Regions are expected to participate in workshops and training activities; develop a ‘sponge strategy’, an action plan and roadmap; inclusively engage with local communities and stakeholders; and actively engage in knowledge-sharing activities.
Eligible applicants:
Areas eligible to be Associated Regions are those who are part of Member States and overseas and Associated Countries to the Horizon Europe Programme.
Applicants must be a regional or local authority or a river basin organisation/authority. Countries that cannot participate due to being part of the SpongeWorks consortium are: Austria, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Budget:
Financial support of up to EUR 100 000 per Associated Region.
Duration:
Submission deadline is on 31 January 2025. Evaluation and selection of proposals in March 2025, and project implementation to start in May 2025.
