Description of the funding initiative
The Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) is an innovative green finance vehicle that facilitates investment in marine and coastal restoration in Scotland. SMEEF contributes to delivering the outcomes in the Scottish Government’s Blue Economy Vision. It adheres to the Principles for Responsible Investment in Natural Capital and is one of the nine pillars of the Nature Conservation £1 Billion Challenge and Route Map. SMEEF will also assist with the Scottish National Strategy for Economic Transition.
SMEEF has two grant funds – the practical Restoration, Recovery or Enhancement (RRE) Grants and Project Development Grants. All applications for marine and coastal restoration are welcome.
Overview of eligibility requirements for applicants
The applicant(s) must be based in the UK and all projects must be delivered in Scotland.
For-profit projects and organisations are welcome to apply to SMEEF but they should form part of a consortium application with a non-profit or other similar legal structure or community group.
As a broad guide SMEEF considers ‘marine and coastal’ to include species and habitats where salt water plays a crucial role in the natural life cycle. The species or habitat at the heart of an application must fit this definition.
