Description

The LIFE-2025-SAP-CLIMA call falls under the Climate Action sub-programme of the broader LIFE Programme. The sub-programme targets actions that contribute to climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, and climate governance and information. Projects under the Climate Change Mitigation (CCM) Priority Area aim to support the implementation of the European Green Deal and the EU Climate Law, contributing toward the 2030 target of at least a 55% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. The broader goal is to help achieve EU climate neutrality by 2050.

Objectives:

Under the LIFE-2025-SAP-CLIMA-CCM call, several areas of intervention align closely with the objectives of Mission Ocean and Waters. In particular, project proposals addressing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable land and coastal management, and those promoting innovative carbon removal solutions linked to aquatic ecosystems:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the land use, agriculture, and forestry sectors: Projects should promote sustainable land, wetland, riverine, estuarine, and coastal management practices that enhance carbon sinks. Actions such as ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions, afforestation, and peatland rehabilitation are encouraged.
  • Promotion of carbon capture, storage, and use, and carbon removals: Projects should develop and implement innovative solutions for carbon removal, particularly focusing on nature-based approaches in marine and coastal environments, such as blue carbon ecosystems (mangroves, salt marshes, seagrasses) and ocean-based carbon sequestration methods.

Eligible applicants:

In order to be eligible, the applicants (beneficiaries and affiliated entities) must:

  • be legal entities (public or private bodies);
  • be established in one of the eligible countries (i.e. EU Member States, including overseas countries and territories, or Non-EU countries from the European Economic Area (EEA) and other countries associated with the LIFE Programme);
  • ensure that the coordinator is established in an eligible country.

Full details are in the call document. Beneficiaries and affiliated entities must register in the Participant Register.

The total indicative budget for the LIFE-2025-SAP-CLIMA-CCM call is EUR 28 million, with an indicative range of project budgets of EUR 1 to 5 million.  Twelve projects are estimated to be funded under this call.

Duration:

Projects funded under this call are expected to have a duration of between 36 and 84 months, with extensions possible if duly justified and formally agreed through an amendment.
