Digital Ocean Forum 2024: Unveiling the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean

IMG5

The Digital Ocean Forum (DOF) 2024 is taking place on 13 June in Brussels. Attendees will be first in line to get a look at the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), a tool that is set to revolutionise ocean management.

The Digital Ocean Forum is Europe's flagship event, exploring how digital tools can support conservation actors in protecting our marine environments. This year’s event will be the culmination of a two year venture, set out by President Von der Leyen, namely to build a Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO).

Practical Information

Date:13 June 2024

Location: Palace of the Academies, Brussels

Further information and livestream here.

At the Forum, the spotlight will be firmly on the DTO prototype. Attendees will be offered a first-hand glimpse into its capabilities and potential impact on our blue economies and ocean resources. Imagine a tool that not only facilitates sustainable development but also aligns seamlessly with ambitious global initiatives such as the Green Deal and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development. The EU DTO promises to be just that—a catalyst for positive change on a global scale.

What is the European Digital Twin of the Ocean?

At its core, the EU DTO is a digital co-creation platform designed to empower ocean communities, scientists, policymakers and citizens with actionable knowledge. By harnessing the power of data and technology, the EU DTO aims to revolutionise the way we perceive and interact with our oceans, ensuring their long-term health and sustainability.

A Digital Twin of the Ocean is a virtual representation of all marine and coastal environments. It gives access to real-time and historical observations from thousands of sensors, as well as numerous satellites in space. By integrating advanced numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, machine learning and high-performance computing, digital twins are able to generate the information needed to design the most effective and sustainable ways of protecting marine and coastal habitats, supporting a more sustainable blue economy, and mitigating and adapting to climate change.

The Digital Ocean Forum 2024 will offer a unique opportunity to see the DTO prototype in action and discover firsthand the transformative potential it holds. From enhancing ocean resource management to tackling climate change and driving sustainable operations in the Blue Economy, the EU DTO promises to be a driving force for positive change in the years to come.

Working Together for Ocean Sustainability

Unveiling of the EU DTO is just the beginning of a larger journey towards sustainable ocean management. The forum will also bring together experts, stakeholders, policymakers and citizens to participate in the co-design and co-creation of the EU DTO, fostering collaboration and innovation every step of the way.

So, mark your calendars and join us at the Digital Ocean Forum 2024 as we embark on a journey towards a brighter, more sustainable future. The EU DTO is poised to revolutionize the way we perceive and interact with our oceans and you won't want to miss out on being a part of this historic moment.

This event is co-organised with Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute.
