The EXCELL project brings together four leading research institutes in four European countries to share and develop knowledge about the impact of big-data applications for cyber-physical systems in production and logistics networks. Driven by worldwide trends toward increasing use of connected devices and data-driven platforms across the industrial, manufacturing and transport sectors, the EXCELL partners are focusing on eight priority areas.
These key topics of research include: cyber-physical systems and human system interaction; business-based Internet of Things and services; context-aware services; and cognitive modelling and social networking approaches, in addition to issues around authentication, authorisation, and data-mining and data interoperability.
More broadly, the work will build upon concepts such as the Factory of the Future and Industry 4.0 which are set to underpin a Fourth Industrial Revolution based on cyber-physical systems that monitor, analyse and automate business processes. By combining innovations such as Internet of Things devices with big-data analytics and emerging technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence, the factories and logistics networks of the future will be transformed into smart environments that increase productivity, efficiency and sustainability.
Through conferences, training activities, staff exchanges and joint research papers, the EXCELL partners are increasing awareness of the interdependencies of cyber-physical systems innovation. This spans multiple research domains within the scientific community, while strengthening innovation capacity across both industry and academia.
As a twinning project under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, EXCELL will significantly bolster the competences of the institutions involved, support the creation of new research networks and spur future cooperation opportunities.
