Description

This report presents a review of state-of-the-art methods for monitoring marine litter (macro-litter and micro-litter) across various marine compartments (beach, sea surface, seafloor, biota) and assesses impacts on biodiversity. The focus is on the Mediterranean basin, with an inclusive approach considering global scientific advancements in the past 5 years. The screening of recent scientific literature covers all Mediterranean countries. The report emphasises findings from ongoing Interreg Med projects like ACT4LITTER, AMARE, MEDSEALITTER. The compiled summary report establishes a common understanding among project partners, highlighting recent advances in marine litter monitoring. This report facilitates the selection of protocols for defining and testing a harmonised marine litter monitoring approach.
