Description

This study focuses on assessing the vulnerability of seabird species to oil spills by considering their behaviour and life history characteristics. The researchers propose an Oil Vulnerability Index (OVI) that incorporates factors such as the likelihood of exposure to oil, the species' vulnerability, and its potential for recovery after an oil incident. Information from the literature on these factors was collected for 62 seabird species in the eastern North Atlantic to establish OVI scores. The methodology provides a comprehensive approach to estimate and compare the sensitivity of different seabird species to the impact of oil spills.
