Plastic

Do you have an idea to rid the world of plastic waste? Or even reduce it by just a bit?

If so, Horizon Europe programme ‘REMEDIES’ and Impact Hub Athens are inviting you to take part in the ‘Plastic Fantastic’ Hackathon.

From spring 2024, the remote programme will run for 6 months and is aimed at mobilising groups of experts, social entrepreneurs and water activists to work together on solutions aimed at reducing and reusing plastic litter.

Which types of ideas are Hackathon organisers looking for?

REMEDIES and Impact Hub Athens are looking for ideas that fall into any of the following categories:

  1. Detection and Monitoring of Plastic Litter:
In order to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment, we need to know where, and how much of it, there is. Can you think of a new method for identifying and tracking plastic waste?
  2. Collection and valorisation:
Collecting waste is good, finding a new use for it is even better. Do you have an idea to streamline collection and upcycling of plastic litter?
  3. Prevention of non-degradable plastics and zero waste solutions:
The best way to reduce the amount of plastic waste is to make sure we use fewer plastic products in our day to day lives. Therefore, hackathon organisers are looking for zero-waste solutions.

Practical information:

  • The programme is open to everyone, all you need is an idea.
  • Applications can be submitted between 12 February and 28 March 2024. Check the REMEDIES website for the application link.
  • The 3 best suggested ideas will be incubated at the Impact Hub to get their solutions into action

About the organisers

The ‘Plastic Fantastic’ hackathon aligns with one of Impact Hub Athens main three pillars of focus for the next decade, encompassing environmental action, rural innovation, and equitable cities. The ultimate goal is to cultivate and nurture ideas, connect participants with experts and job markets, and together, emerge as champions in the fight for a cleaner environment.
