Description of the funding initiative
Oceans 5 is an international collaboration of philanthropists and foundations. The organisation helps identify, assess and approve projects for investment and remains engaged in project oversight and implementation. The collaborative is a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
Oceans 5 makes direct grants, leverages matching grants, provides in-kind services and shares strategic guidance. The focus is on projects and campaigns to constrain overfishing and to establish marine reserves, particularly if they provide tangible and lasting benefits to coastal communities and the world’s oceans. Projects that engage multiple organizations working toward common objectives over discrete periods of time are preferred.
Overview of eligibility requirements for applicants
Oceans 5 uses criteria to assess projects for potential funding under its MPA and Fisheries Management portfolios. These criteria are: alignment of the project with Ocean 5 goals; geography of the project; the project leveraging specific strategic interventions; and measures of success. Oceans 5 has supported projects around the world, including in Europe.
