Description

This publication explores computing research in underwater environments, focusing on positioning methods. Unlike on land, underwater lacks a common positioning system. Dead reckoning, which estimates position changes from a known point, is promising but untested underwater. The report presents AEOLUS, a prototype for testing 15 different algorithms in both ground and underwater settings. Results show that while displacement and turn errors can be estimated within 5% error, the best methods differ between land and underwater. Performance also varies based on motion patterns, with some algorithms excelling in sharp turns and others in gradual turns
