Description of the funding initiative
The Latvian Council of Science (LSC) implements the science and technology development policy of Latvia, ensures expertise and the implementation and supervision of research programmes and projects financed by the State budget, EU structural funds and other foreign financial instruments. It provides scientific expertise to the public and private sectors and promotes and coordinates international scientific cooperation.
The LSC’s programmes can be summarised into the following:
- State Research Programme: programmes aim to create new knowledge, expertise and innovations, develop new solutions to contribute to the development of the specific field and strategic national development goals.
- Basic and Applied Research Programme: aims to create new knowledge and technological know-how in all Fields of Science, and is organized as annual open calls.
- Postdoctoral research grants: provide an opportunity for young researchers to develop their research capacity and career while contributing to the goals of Latvia’s Smart Specialization strategy.
- EEA and Norway Grants: Latvia is a recipient of these funds provided by Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Three programmes within this fund cover the environment, energy, and climate change.
- International Programme: this includes sub-programmes under HORIZON Europe.
