Description of the funding initiative
The Swedish Hydroelectric Environmental Fund helps hydropower owners and operators fund measures to reduce the environmental impacts of hydropower plants. This is done according to the national plan for hydropower, taking into account the EU Water Framework Directive and the Swedish Environmental Quality goals.
The Hydroelectric Environmental Fund is founded and financed by nine Swedish energy companies, to enable the national strategy for improving the ecological status of waters in Sweden to be implemented in practice.
Overview of eligibility requirements for applicants
Only hydropower operators in Sweden are eligible applicants. To be accepted and to receive funding, applicants must follow the rules and requirements in the General Terms and Conditions. Applicants must also:
- Conduct water operations for the production of hydroelectric power in Sweden at the time when registration for the national plan was open (first half of 2019);
- Be registered with and comply with the National Plan for Modern Environmental Conditions ;
- Be registered with Vattenkraftens Miljöfond.

Rules on co-financing
The fund finances up to 85% of the costs for investigation, examination of the environmental measures in court and the actual implementation of the measures decided by the court. Production losses can also be compensated.
