This report consolidates existing knowledge on marine litter and its impacts in Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) while identifying knowledge gaps for PlasticBusters MPAs in terms of marine litter and monitoring. Conducting a review of marine litter studies in Mediterranean coastal and marine protected areas, the report builds on the results of Plastic Busters MPAs work relating to state-of-the-art methods for monitoring marine litter and its impact on biodiversity. The report seeks to establish a shared understanding among project partners regarding available knowledge on marine litter in Mediterranean MPAs (quantities, composition, sources, and impacts). The report informs the design of a targeted and effective marine litter monitoring strategies while identifying gaps and shortcomings that require attention in marine litter monitoring approaches.
