Description
This publication comprehensively gathers the knowledge generated by the MARELITT project, covering many aspects of the impact of marine litter in the form of derelict fishing gear (DFG) in the Baltic Sea, including mapping, retrieval, recycling and prevention of ghost nets. It provides a sound basis for strategic planning to identify stakeholders, address legal or regulatory frameworks and plan work processes. In such a way, it is aimed to serve as an action plan and provide guidance to organisations and governments towards actionable steps for fighting ghost nets, all over the world. The blueprint offers policymakers and harbour managers a strategic mitigation solution that can be used to both plan clean-up operations at sea and to create a waste management system capable of handling DFG. The blueprint presents so-called pillars that, for each activity, contain references to practical details from the relevant reports, step-by-step recommendations and the potential stakeholders to involve.
