2024 PROTECT BALTIC Stakeholder Conference

Baltic

PROTECT BALTIC addresses the urgent need to expand marine protected areas in the Baltic Sea. On 29 February 2024, the project is hosting its inaugural conference. At the event, stakeholders working in the region will gather to discuss how they can cooperate on a number of topics, including guidelines for managing marine protected areas, spatial modelling, ecosystem services, legal frameworks for planning marine spaces, contributing to a restoration action plan and fostering a shared regional understanding of marine spatial protection that establishes common terminology and sets ecologically relevant protection targets and indicators.

Parallel to the conference, PROTECT BALTIC is also organising a youth event, which aims to give a platform to young people to express their views on the environment, including what needs to be done for marine protection and how we can redefine our relationship with nature.

About the PROTECT BALTIC project

PROTECT BALTIC is an initiative under Horizon Europe that aims to address the challenges of expanding marine protected areas (MPAs) and ensuring their effectiveness in the Baltic Sea region.

PROTECT BALTIC was launched in August 2023 and will run until August 2028. Its aim is to develop, demonstrate, and promote protection and restoration solutions in the Baltic Sea. This will be achieved by strategically monitoring and managing human activities, with a focus on reducing their impact through spatial protection measures for marine protected areas (MPAs), other effective conservation measures (OECMs), as well as actions to restore and rehabilitate damaged ecosystems.
