Barcelona to host 2024 UN Ocean Decade Conference

Ocean

In 2024, the Ocean Decade Conference, hosted by the Government of Spain in Barcelona from April 10 to 12, will serve as a milestone, assessing achievements, identifying key areas for action, and addressing critical challenges like climate change, food security, biodiversity, ocean economy, pollution, and natural hazards.

With a theme of 'delivering the science we need for the ocean we want,' this three-day conference aims to bring the global Ocean Decade community together. It will be a platform to celebrate progress, set shared priorities, and lay the foundation for sustainable ocean management and science-based innovation on both global and local scales. The event recognises the urgency of collective action and the significance of international collaboration to overcome the immense challenges facing our oceans.

Leading up to the conference, Satellite Events will provide additional opportunities for partners to contribute to the discourse. For example, The SHORE, ProBleu and BlueLightS Consortia Coalition, in collaboration with EMSEA, which propose a dialogue towards a common commitment to ocean literacy by engaging the Network of European Blue Schools. And the DTO4ECOPS’ workshop, aiming to revisit existing ocean data-sharing efforts across regions, including initiatives on data and information management, capacity building, and networks.
