Knowledge Valorisation: a key to maximising R&I impact

The Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) on Knowledge Valorisation has concluded. Its objective was to empower Member States and Associated Countries to improve policies and public support to turn knowledge into practical solutions that benefit society and economy, with a focus on skills, inter-sectoral collaboration, and incentives.

The MLE highlighted a critical need for a common understanding of knowledge valorisation. A key takeaway is the importance of a long-term research and innovation strategy tailored to each country's unique context, fostering a shared vision for advancement. Additionally, capacity building and multi-stakeholder networks are instrumental to operationalise such strategies. In order to benefit from the exercise, stakeholders need the knowledge and mindset to actively engage. Furthermore, effective communication strategies are also vital to raise awareness about the potential of knowledge valorisation.

The MLE participants developed a toolbox, with a focus on:

  • Skills development: fostering researchers' entrepreneurial skills, inter-sectoral mobility, and knowledge-sharing expertise.
  • Collaboration: fostering multi-stakeholders’ networks with researchers, universities, industry, and policymakers.
  • Early integration: integrating intellectual assets management, standardisation, and skills development into research projects.
  • Accessibility: recognising the importance of intermediaries for making knowledge accessible and usable.
