The EU-funded ESTEEM2 project is connecting European researchers in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for materials science with state-of-the-art TEM instrumentation, methodology and tools. The result: new insight into the complex materials in everything from optics and electronics to lightweight parts in aircraft.

Embracing the children born of war

Whether the father was friend or foe, the local women to whom these children are born often raise them in difficult circumstances. An EU-funded research project is shedding new light on an age-old phenomenon, with the aim of providing information that could feed into policies to help them.

To freeze or not to freeze - it's in the proteins

EU-funded scientists delved into a special class of proteins to solve the mystery of how creatures such as winter flounder and ocean pout don't freeze along with the waters they live in. The results could lead to new bio-based anti-freeze alternatives for industry, medicine and food-production.
