The site is organised as follows:

the Overview section presents the She Figures Index through a map, highlighting the countries for which the index is available.
the Interactive Map allows the exploration of the indicators encompassed in the She Figures main study through an interactive map.
the Data explorer section presents the indicators for She Figures in more detail, allowing for visualisation through charts and data tables.

Please note that indicators showing the compound annual growth rates (CAGR) are not included in this interface. These indicators can be found in the main study, or alternatively, can be calculated using the data provided under the ‘Data explorer’ section which is available for download.

She Figures Index

The Index draws on She Figures indicators across six dimensions: segregation in the pipeline, research sectors, career progression, decision-making, research participation, and incorporating a gender dimension in research and innovation (R&I) content (GDRIC).

Each of these dimensions is assigned a score between 0 and 100, and an overall score is calculated as well. A score of 100 denotes that gender equality has been fully achieved.

She Figures publication

A large portion of the She Figures publication is dedicated to reporting on a core set of well-established indicators, which serve as the foundation for exposing persistent gender inequalities in the fields of R&I. Each She Figures publication builds on previous versions by introducing new indicators which aim to bring additional and critical gender-based issues to the forefront of the science and technology debate.

The publication is structured along several chapters that cover different aspects of the progress of gender equality in R&I. It follows the ‘chronological journey’ of women and men, from graduating from doctoral education to participating in the labour market and in decision-making roles. The indicators available in this interface are grouped under each chapter as follows:

Chapter 2 presents indicators that showcase the participation of women and men at different levels of higher education, across fields of study.

Chapter 3 includes indicators for the participation of women and men in science and technology occupations, with a specific emphasis on women’s presence in STEM-related careers.

Chapter 4 focuses on the participation of women and men as researchers, exploring the evolution of patterns of employment across key sectors of the economy over time.

Chapter 5 presents results on the working conditions of women and men researchers.

Chapter 6 compares the proportions of women and men at different stages of academic careers and examines women’s participation in decision-making and leadership positions.

Chapter 7 explores gender differences among authors publishing research, the frequency of their publications, funding success rates, and representation within authorship teams and patent outputs. It also covers the extent to which a gender dimension is incorporated into R&I content.

In addition to the main report, She Figures also presents country fiches which feature a range of selected indicators and an overview on the progress towards gender equality for each Member State. The country fiches can be accessed through this link.
