Description of the funding initiative
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is an international collaborative fund that addresses key environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution, and the health of land and oceans. Over the past thirty years, GEF has contributed nearly $25 billion in funding and mobilized an additional $138 billion for projects that align with international environmental goals, with efforts spanning across 186 member governments and various groups, including civil society, Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth. The GEF emphasizes integration and inclusivity in its initiatives. This foundation’s commitment to ocean and water health makes it highly relevant for Mission Ocean and Water objectives.
Overview of eligibility requirements for applicants
The Global Environment Facility commonly allocates funds for government-led projects and programs. It is the responsibility of each government to select the executing agency, which could be, among others, a governmental institution, a civil society organization, a private sector company, or a research institution.
