Description

The DANUBElifelines (DLL) project works to safeguard and restore migratory fish populations and their habitats across the Danube River Basin. It combines scientific research, demonstration at eight pilot sites, and policy engagement to develop a “Blueprint for Migratory Fish Recovery” that integrates ecological, socio-economic, and governance dimensions into a comprehensive restoration strategy

The project has opened a call for Associated Regions, inviting five regions to join as partners who will help scale up and replicate DLL solutions while receiving tailored technical assistance and access to knowledge, tools, and networks.

Objectives:

The call aims to strengthen regional capacity for restoring freshwater connectivity and migratory fish habitats. Associated Regions will gain support to monitor fish populations, plan and implement habitat restoration, and test feasibility for dam removals. They will also be involved in developing business models, engaging stakeholders, and creating replication roadmaps that align with DLL’s Action Plan.

Eligible applicants:

The lead partner or sole applicant must be a local or regional authority from an EU Member State or a Horizon Europe associated country. Authorities from DLL partner countries — Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, Germany, Serbia, United Kingdom, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Bulgaria — are not eligible.

Budget:

Each Associated Region may receive up to EUR 100 000 in funding, reimbursing actual costs incurred.

Duration:

The call is open from 1 September 2025 until 30 December 2025. Contracting is expected to complete by 30 April 2026. Project implementation should start no later than 1 May 2026 and continue in line with the DLL project timeline until 30 April 2029.
