It\u2019s a sector that\u2019s incredibly important for our economy and has impact across all sorts of other industries.\u2019\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMagas created the Music Tech Fest, a community of more than 5 000 people who share ideas around music and technology, which, she says, has not only led to developments in that industry but also unexpected results in others.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u2018For instance, there would be a neuroscientist who was interested in music from a neurological and psychological point of view, they would come in (to the ecosystem) as a place for research, they would get engaged in creating new applications for others and suddenly this thing would explode in all sorts of directions and new ideas for neuroscience and neuroscientific investigations would come out of it.\u2019\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe awards, which are designed to showcase the achievements of female entrepreneurs in science and research, were presented by Carlos Moedas, the EU\u2019s Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, and Mairead McGuinness, Vice-President of the European Parliament, at a ceremony at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 March.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERole models\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECommissioner Moedas said the awards had two main purposes \u2013 to recognise women\u2019s achievements, and to establish role models that can encourage the next generation of female entrepreneurs.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAddressing the winners directly, he said: \u2018You have to be strong, you have to be role models. There is no free lunch, you have to help other women. But most importantly you are really standard-bearers for research and innovation. If you leave tonight with just one message, let it be this: let your passion be contagious to other women, let it spread to everyone.\u2019\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECurrently only \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/DocsRoom\/documents\/7481\/attachments\/1\/translations\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E31 % of entrepreneurs\u003C\/a\u003E in the EU are women, according to a 2014 EU report.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe European Parliament\u2019s McGuinness said that women\u2019s contributions were often overlooked: \u2018I\u2019m an agricultural economist. And what has struck me over the decades working in that area is that when it comes to women and representation, I know women are very active in rural Europe but they\u2019re not always very visible. She has developed so-called lab-on-a-chip technology, a device that can detect diseases such as cancer or other infections from a single drop of blood.
