In the Dutch capital Amsterdam, experts have devised a technology to restore a degree of sight in the blind.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThese and other medical advances across the continent all have one thing in common: they result from an unprecedented EU-funded research project to expand understanding of the human brain \u2013 the body\u2019s most complex organ \u2013 and help doctors tackle impairments in it.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Human Brain Project (HBP), which ran for a decade through September 2023, brought together 155 organisations from 19 countries.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt was driven by the wide-ranging impact of brain disorders, which afflict an estimated 165 million Europeans, are responsible for illnesses ranging from Alzheimer\u2019s disease and stroke to depression and addiction and cost healthcare budgets in Europe approximately \u20ac1 trillion a year.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWith its own budget of more than \u20ac600 million, HBP used cutting-edge technologies \u2013 from high-performance computing to neurorobotics \u2013 to produce a \u201cHuman Brain Atlas\u201d.
