Manufacturers ranging from aircraft maker Airbus to electrical equipment specialist Schneider Electric are exploring digital-twin concepts and setting up virtual manufacturing facilities.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPlug and produce\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDIMOFAC, which began in late 2019, has developed a system to make manufacturing more agile.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ECalled \u201cPlug and Produce\u201d, it renders reconfiguring production lines easier by linking real machines with digital twins.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EUsing the system, a manufacturer could simulate a new set-up virtually and iron out any troubles online before installing the equipment in an actual factory.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EProduction problems can arise, for example, from using recycled raw materials because their properties aren\u2019t always identical, according to Girardot, who is European project coordinator in advanced materials and manufacturing at French research institute CEA-Liten.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u2018In this case you have to adapt your production,\u2019 she said. \u2018The faster you do that, the better it is. The main objective is to reduce reconfiguration times.\u2019\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe project\u2019s \u201cPlug and Produce\u201d system will be tested in five actual production facilities around Europe.
